John BUTTERS was convicted at Lincoln 5 April 1836 for stealing - a fowl. Gaol report: previous conviction. 14 year transportation sentence. Hulk Report: Good. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Eden' 1836. Ship Surgeon's Report: good.

Single man.

Assignments, chain gang, road party.

Further charge, Launceston Court. Life sentence.

Admitted to Queens Orphanage, New Town, nr Hobart, on 25 Sept 1861, aged 5yrs 3mths. Father is John Butters, ship Eve 1 (mistranscription, should be Eden); Mother listed as Flora McGuiness (McInnes), ship Duchess of Northumberland. Remarks: "Mother in gaol, father had deserted". Robert was discharged 16 Feb 1870 to James Elliott, Huon Road & again 5 Feb 1872 to Richard Lester at Franklin (employers). (Ref. Orphan 718)
