Indictments for the Summer Assizes at Somerset 1829 [Ref ASSI 25/21/10]
James HOCKEY was charged with Cornelius LOXTON on a charge of stealing one saddle worth twenty shillings and one bridle worth five shillings belonging to William HYATT of Shepton Mallet Somerset on 4 May 1829. However, they were not tried on this charge, but were both convicted on another indictment, of stealing a gelding worth twenty pounds belong to Henry HODGES at Doulting Somerset on 13 May 1829. They both pleaded not guilty but were convicted and sentenced to be hanged, a sentence which was commuted to transportation. Both men had previous convictions. They had been found guilty of felony at the Quarter Sessions at the Castle of Taunton on 15 Oct 1827. [Letter from PRO London to Laurel Merritt 14 Feb 1986] Commuted to 14 yrs transportation, 27 Aug 1829 transferred to Ilchester County Gaol, 29 Sep 1829 transferred to Captivity Prison Hulk, Devonport, arrived Van Dieman’s Land on the Sir Charles Forbes 26 Jul 1830. Arrived July 27th 1830 - assigned to Mrs Norman 1832-35 - assigned to Mr Allardyce 1836 TOL - Ticket Of Leave issues 1840 CP - Conditional Pardon Sep 5th 1842 - Marriage to fellow convict Julia Butler Oct 21 1842 - Birth of first daughter Honor (named after Julia's mother) 1844 - Free Certificate 1844 - Birth of son George Loxton 1847 - Birth of daughter Mary Janet Gange (husband George Mitchell Gange was son of convict Thomas John alias John Thomas Gange and free immigrant Margaret Robison) 1849 - Birth of daughter Margaret Dennison 1852 - appeared in court after his wife Julia had threatened to kill him whilst drunk (case dismissed) 1853 - birth of son Dennis Loxton 1853 - birth of daughter Julia Toll Death 1873 Jellalabad Station Victoria Cornelius Loxton's 2nd cousin twice removed is Williams Charles Loxton who the SA town Loxton is named after.
