Biographies
William Conkey may have been born in Ireland in 1818, but most likely was born in Cumberland, north east England . We know his father, John Conkey most certainly was born in Ireland around 1757. However we cannot be certain when he emigrated across the Irish Sea to Lancashire.
On the 31st March 1805, at St Margaret's church in Whitehaven, Lancashire John Conkey married Margaret Simpson and together they set up home in Whitehaven. We can confirm that William was one of at least three sons that the couple had, and possibly more siblings too. David Conkey was the eldest son born in 1798 before the couple had emigrated and married, then John was born in 1800 and finally William in 1818.
The surname appears to have been recorded in various forms as CONKEY and McCONKEY, but William can be traced through court records and newspaper cuttings.
The UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849 indicates that aged 22 William was convicted at Cumberland Assizes. This occurred in Feb 1840 and he was given a 14 year sentence. He was subsequently transported from Carlisle prison to Warrior Prison Hulk. Arrived 10th March 1840. To be transported on the Eden. Departed 8th July 1840, arrived 18th November 1840.
