Matthew John Gibbons was born in England in 1765. He was sentenced to seven years transportation for the theft of a little over a pound of tea aged 22.

He was confined aboard Ceres Hulk in Langston Harbour in Portsmouth prior to embarking Surprize transport for NSW 30 Nov 1789.
He arrived in Sydney in 26 June 1790 as part of the 2nd fleet

After marrying Margaret Gordon on 13 June 1793 he, two weeks later, enlisted in the New South Wales Corp and was given a conditional pardon in October of that year. His employer was Major Grose.
