Biographies

Born about 1813, Samuel Smith was a native of the Isle of Man, was married with seven dependent children and had no previous convictions. He was a good provider for his family and a respected business man, making and selling spectacles and optical instruments throughout England and Wales. Twelve Appeals were made against Samuel's conviction for stabbing with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in Beaumaris on 8th September 1848, with many of them being accompanied by several good character references. Despite a confession being made by the person who had committed the stabbing (allegedly making a very superficial wound), the Appeals fell on deaf ears and Samuel was transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1852. He died in Deloraine in June 1884.
