Biographies
James Conroy was an
Irish convict transported to New South Wales for Life at age 19.
James was 17 when convicted of manslaughter at the Queen’s County Spring Assizes on 14 March 1833. He then spent a month in the city prison before transfer to the prison hulk ‘Surprise’ in Cork Harbour. After 15 months on Surprise he finally transferred to the convict ship Blenheim and departed Ireland for NSW on 27 July 1834. He arrived in Sydney on 14 November 1834, by which time he was 19.
13 years after arriving in NSW James received a conditional pardon. He then married Mary Crotty (the daughter of another convict named John Crotty) and they had 7 children. Later on Mary had an affair with a local married aboriginal man while James was away looking for work, resulting in a baby girl. Mary took the baby and left the family home soon after, leaving James with their 7 children.
James Conroy died at Windsor on 1 November 1880 at the age of 65. His headstone in St Matthew's Catholic Cemetery in Windsor is still standing.
