Biographies

Born Sheffield, England in 1818(unconfirmed). Transported 7 years for Larceny in 1837 arriving Hobart 1838.
Consigned to Edward Steel, Hobart as a labourer. Granted Conditional Pardon 1843, Certificate of Freedom 1844. Arrived Melbourne 1846 on board Swan River Packet. Married Emma Dodds 1848. Moved to Belfast (Port Fairy)1849. Had 10 children only 3 living to adulthood. Found gold at Sailors Flat. Opened a Hotel Sportsman's Arms in Newstead, Vic. He organised the local pigeon shooting contests. When Emma died in 1876, he moved to Balranald to live with daughter then moved to Echuca when her marriage broke down. He died 1893 at 75 years old and is buried in the Echuca Cemetary.
