Biographies

It is believed that Charles Jerrison did marry Rebecca Jones in 1846 as per linctas but it also has Rebecca dying in 1846 not 1848 as described by previous owners of Charles Jerrison. It is strongly believed that Charles Jerrison changed his name to Charles Glossop. Glossop being his brothers first name and his mother's maiden name.
From here on in Charles Jerrison becomes Charles Glossop.

Dies in 1891, Oakleigh, Victoria.

Charles was born 23 Jul 1809 in Chesterfield & christened 30 Dec 1809 in Chesterfield Derbyshire the fourth of six children of William Jerrison & Elizabeth Glossop.

The Jerrison name appears in research as Gerrison and variants of Margerrison. His brother Charles Margerrison (Isabella 1832) appears elsewhere on this site.

Charles was tried at York West Riding Quarter Sessions for stealing clothing apparel found guilty and sentenced to 7years transportation

Charles arrived Tasmania (Van Diemans Land) aboard Woodford 30 Aug 1828 with his Indent showing him as a Slater and with three previous convictions noted.

Charles had many brushes with authority some of which led to extension of his imprisonment; 9 Nov 1831 3 days in chains 4 Jan 1832. 3 days on bread &water 24 Jan 1832 12 lashes

Charles eventually married Rebecca Jones 25 Novemb1846 at Port Sorell, Tasmania Rebecca died 25 August 1848 at Launceston Tasmania (Tasmanian Pioneer Index).

Leanne’s note is correct, whilst looking for his brother George and their nephew it came to notice ( family lore story) all three had met up in Victoria & that Charles then known as Glossop.

Twelve children Mary 1856, William 1862, Emma 1865, William 1867, John 1867, Elizabeth 1869, Charles 1871, Davis 1874, Margaret 1876, Rose 1878, Isabella 1881 & James 1881.

All twelve had births registered under name IRVINE an and later adopted use of GLOSSOP name with all their deaths recorded with both parent names shown.

Charles was still legally married to Mary Mahan 1818/1887 who was in receipt of maitenance from Charles although there are many Court reports where she sought recourse for non payment.

Mary GLOSSOP died 1887 East Melbourne Immigrants Home Charles died 30 Nov 1891 at Oakleigh Vic & buried unmarked Oakleigh Cem. Janet IRVINE died 15 June 1896 Bendigo Hospital & buried Bendigo Cem.
