Biographies

Elizabeth was born in 1819 in Stockport, Cheshire, England.

In 1842 (aged 23) she was a Church of England follower, could read but not write and was a House Servant.

In June 1842 (unmarried/single) she gave birth to an illegitimate child, fathered by a G. Baker. Sometime in July 1842 she drowned the baby who was 6 weeks old. She was tried in the Cheshire Assizes on 30th. July 1842 and was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. This was later commuted to transportation for life.

She set sail from Woolwich on 2nd. October 1842 on the ship "Garland Grove", and arrived in Van Diemans Land on 20th. January 1843.

She was Convict No. 599. Tasmanian Archive Records show her Indent on pages 94 & 95 and her Convict Record on page 122. Hand writing of her Convict Record is hard to read, but her Ticket of Leave was revoked on 28/9/1852 and was restored on 5/4/1853. On the 18/4/53 she applied for Conditional Pardon which was approved on 29/8/1854.

She married Thomas Copnall on 22/6/1864 in Oatlands, Tasmania.
