INFORMATION

Library Survey - tell us what you want!

The Hawkesbury City Library Service would like you to take a few minutes to fill in a very short survey– so that we can find out what collections, services & activities you would like to find at your library. The survey will be online until Sunday 30th November 2008.  Go straight to survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=I8i5dX0uVsEq4OcjnKLD8g_3d_3d     or go to Council’s website www.hawkesbury.nsw.gov.au/  & follow the prompt on the front page.  As well as library members, we would particularly like to hear from people who are not members, and why. Your assistance will help the Library plan for 2009-2010 and guide us in developing services in response to community needs.  We want to know where we need to focus our efforts in developing or introducing activities that are of interest and use to you and your family. Please encourage family and friends to participate as well. If you have any enquiries please contact the library on 4560-4460 or email library@hawkesbury.nsw.gov.au

Launch of Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865 – 1935

New release on Ancestry reveals over 130,000 Aussies who settled in Canada from 1865-1935. The records of more than 130,000 Australian emigrants who headed for a new life in Canada are available online for the first time revealing information on Aussies who hoped for better opportunities in the then newly dubbed ‘final frontier’. The Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935 contain 7.2 million names, including those of more than 5.6 million immigrants from all over the world who headed to Canada for a better life. A significant number of these emigrants departed from Sydney Harbour and the nearby ports of Newcastle, Port Stephens and Port Kembla. Emigrants also boarded Canadian-bound ships as far north as Cairns and Brisbane, south to Adelaide, Ardrossan and Melbourne, and a total of 11 passengers boarded in Dampier and Broome. The passenger lists are indexed by name, year of arrival, port of arrival and departure and ship name, revealing fascinating detail about passengers, from their health to religion and even the amount of cash they had in hand when they disembarked. Ancestry is available on AncestryLibrary in the library for members for free.
