Biographies

Gabriel How Lawrence (some times known as Gabriel William) was born about 1817 and Christened on the 22 June 1817 at Rainham, Kent. He was the son of Thomas Lawrence and his wife Abigail.
He is not recorded on either the 1841 or 1851 census as he was in Tasmania. In 1837 he was charged with larceny at the Kent Assize and sentenced to imprisonment for 6 months. In 1838 he again appeared at the Kent Assizes and again charged with larceny and sentenced to transportation for life. He was one of 15 received from Maidstone on 16th January 1838 to spent time on the prison hulk "Fortitude ", which was moored at Chatham, before transportation. On the 24 June 1838 he left from Sheerness for Van Dieman’s Land on board the "Coromandel". Also on board was his father, Thomas. In the 1841 convict muster it was recorded that he was employed Mr Aussell at Bothwell. He was again recorded in the 1846 Muster. By the 1849 muster he was recorded as having a ticket of leave and by 1851 recorded in the convict pardons. While in Tasmania he married 19 April 1947 to Agnes Munroe. In March 1952 he traveled from Launceston to Melbourne, by steerage, on board the "Haleyon". Also on board was his wife Agnes but I have not been able to find out what happened to her after that.
Some time between March 1952 and March 1953 Gabriel returned to England. He most likely served on board a ship as crew as this was a common way for released convicts to return to England, and he gives his occupation as mariner at the time of his second marriage.
He married again on 30 March 1853 at Milton Next Sittingbourne to Charlotte Cheel daughter of Thomas Cheel and his wife Sarah. Charlotte's sister Marie was married to Gabriel's brother Peter.
Gabriel and Charlotte's first child, a daughter Hannah Charlotte, was born at and their son Robert Gabriel
He left London 2 August 1858 on board the “Indiana” with his wife Charlotte, 25 and their two eldest children Charlotte Hannah, 3 and Robert Gabriel, an infant, arriving in Lyttleton New Zealand on 23rd November 1858. He was at that time recorded as a labourer of Kent. They had a further nine children
On 14 Apr 1860 he was in the Militia List were he was recorded as Lawrence, William Gabriel - Stanmore road, near Christchurch - Labourer. In the same year he was recorded on the Jury list in the "Lyttelton Times". Jury duty began in New Zealand on 23 December 1841. The jury rolls include all individuals who were qualified and liable to serve as jurors - that is every male, British subject between the ages of 21 and 60 who resided in New Zealand.
He was declared bankrupt April 1869. At the time he was farming at Mount Grey Downs. In 1881 he was a farmer of Amberley. He was living in McQuarrie St, South Invercargill. By 1893 he had moved to Seaward Bush, Invercargill.
He died in 1899. His cause of death was gangrene of foot.
