Biographies

Born about 1815, John was found guilty of cow stealing at Somerset Assizes 4. 1. 1836 and sentanced to Life. Previously in Ilchester gaol in 1833 for 3 days as a minor aged 16 for larceny. Was a farm shepherd 5' 6" tall. Transported to NSW on ship Moffatt's 2nd voyage under master Thomas Bolton surgeon John Smith with 396 male convicts - sailed from Portsmouth 7. 5. 1836 arriving NSW on 31. 8. 1836. Moffatt was built at Bengal in 1807, and was 820 tons.

On 11. 4. 1839 at Port Macquarrie NSW an application to marry Johanna Driscoll ( see separate entry under ship " Diamond " ) was granted in view of good behaviour of both, when working for J R Middleton Esq.

He got his ticket of leave in 1844 and a conditional pardon in 1853. He died at Macleay River in 1866.

He may have been born at Horsington, Somerset son of Joseph ( 1780 - 1835 ) and Marion ( 1788 - 1876 ) Driscoll.
