Biographies
Tom McGowan was convicted of Sedition for participating in the Defender Uprising in Roscommon in 1794. and sentenced to 7 yrs Transportasion He was held in Cork Prison till 1796 when he was put on the Maquis Cornwallis bound for NSW On the way the prisoners mutinied and some were hanged at sea, the rest reported on arrival
Tom left behind family members including a son , also Tom , and brother John who fled to Scotland settling in Edinburgh
Family recorded as agricultural labourers young Tom was designated as a butcher so he had a skill probably from his father John McGowan was later in charge of GrassMarket Cattle/sheep below the Castle
