Biographies
James Maher was born about 1800 in Upperchurch, Tipperary. He was sentenced to 7 years transportation in 1828, for manslaughter. In April 1828 the Clonmel Herald reported “James Maher, John Dwyer, Daniel Maher, James Dwyer and Philip Maher were indicted for the murder of Edmond Ryan, of Upperchurch, on the 6th October. The parties in this case having had a dispute a general fight and throwing of stones commenced between them, when the deceased received a blow of stone, from Connor Maher, who was not on trial, which fractured his scull (sic) and caused his death. They were all found guilty of manslaughter. James Maher, the principal person in the fight, was sentenced to seven years’ transportation, and the four others, who it appeared by evidence had unintentionally arrived at the scene of the battle and joined in the throwing of stones, were sentenced to twelve months imprisonment.”
He sailed from Cork on 21 September, 1828 on board the “Governor Ready” and, after a passage of 117 days, arrived in Sydney on 16 January 1829. He was initially assigned to B Sullivan of Pitt St upon arrival.
In December 1833 he was granted a Ticket of Leave for the district of Paterson and in September 1836 was granted a conditional pardon.
In 1838 he applied to marry Catherine McCabe per “Andromeda”. It would appear this marriage did not proceed as he married Mary Mulcahey in 1841.
Catherine McCabe is recorded as being buried at Kurrajong on 10 February 1852.
