Biographies

Ruth Hill was born in Walsall Staffordshire in about 1816. At the age of 17 she was convicted for stealing a pistol and sentenced to 7 years transportation. On 28 April 1833 she and four other prisoners from Staffordshire boarded the Buffalo. The ship sailed on the 12 May of the same year and arrived in Sydney on 5 October.
On her arrival, Ruth was assigned to the Maitland Bench.On 5 July 1834, Ruth married John Henderson, a 42 year old ex convict who had been transported for 14 years. At this point Ruth would have been assigned to her husband.
In 1840 Ruth was granted a Certificate of Freedom.
John Henderson died 1 August 1844. Ruth married butcher William Chambers 31 August 1846 in the Presbyterian church Hinton NSW.
She died 29 July 1865. Cause of Death was given as Water Dropsey.
