Van Dieman’s Land Police ID: 726M.
Crime: Housebreaking and Larceny for stealing items of apparel from J. Hipper in Loughton, Essex. Tried with John Lane and Frederick Phipps.
Trial place: Essex England.
Convicted: 10 December 1828.
Sentence: Death, commuted to life. Transported.
Prior conviction / charges: 1) Uttering of a base coin in July 1828. 2) Stealing a deer.
Sentence for previous conviction: 1) Charge dismissed. 2) Six months imprisonment or pay a fine. I can't find a prison record for this so it looks like James paid the fine.

Arrived: Van Diemen's Land: 20 November 1829.
Convict Ship: Thames.
Native place: Loughton, Essex, England.
Occupation: Labourer, farm labourer. Farmer in Tasmania.
Baptised: 30 October 1808 in Loughton, Essex.
Parents: Father Richard Monk and mother Mary Grubb.
Siblings: Four that I can positively identify, working on the others.
Married: Elizabeth Brown. Daughter of convict Eleanor Brown (ship America). Elizabeth accompanied her mother to Van Diemen's Land. Married Elizabeth in Sorell, Tasmania.
Children: 12-14. Researching these now.
Died: 25 February 1889, Tasmania.
