The Charles Jones who arrived per the Clyde landed in NSW on 27 August 1832. At that time, he would have been about 17 years of age. He was convicted at Hertford, Hertfordshire, on 28 November 1831 to transportation for 7 years.
The record of his trial shows that he was most recently from Bushey in Hertford. It is possible, but uncertain, that he was born to James and Sarah Jones and baptised on 22 October 1815 in the village of Northaw. Northaw is near the border with Middlesex and approximately 25 kilometres north of London. Hertford (the place of trial) is a further 16 kilometres north of Northaw. Bushey, where Charles was reportedly located before trial, is around 20 kilometres west-south-west of Northaw, and 30 kilometres north-west of London. This Charles appears to have been one of five children to James and Sarah recorded as being baptised there. There are records of the other children' marrying and/ or dying but not Charles which does suggest that he could have been transported and thus not appear in any further records in England.
The Criminal Register for Hertford in 1831 shows that he was convicted of larceny but provides no other meaningful details. The Indictment Files for Hertfordshire Winter Assizes records that he was, "late of the Parish of Bushey in the County of Hertford, Labourer".
The indictment goes on to record that on the 8th of September 1832 he was accused of stealing, "...one watch to the value of forty shillings, two seals to the value of two pence, one watch key to the value of one penny, one ring and slide to the value of one penny, and one watch ribbon to the value of one penny, of the goods and chattels of John Jolley…"."
His conviction is recorded in the Crown Minute Books for Summer 1829-Winter 1832 and that in at Hertfordshire Winter Gaol, "'Tuesday 29th Nov Before Mr Justice Alderson in Crown Court... Charles Jones ---- Stealing goods v 40/5 of John Jolley... Jury say Guilty" .
In all, six men were convicted in Hertford on that day: one for life; three for 14 years; and Charles and one other for 7 years. The local newspaper reports that on 13 December he was in a party of prisoners, "Removed from Hertford Gaol on Board the Cumberland Hulk, at Chatham".
The Home Office Register of Prisoners in convict hulks moored at Chatham: Ganymede, Dolphin and Cumberland for the years 1820-33 (p.200) records his arrival there, about 2 weeks after his conviction, on 13 December. Charles' age is shown as 15 years, and appears to record his offence as being, "Stg a Watch". The Register also contains indices listing every prisoner and observations on their behaviour. Charles appears in the second index (bottom of p.163) and about him it is stated, "1727, Jones Charles, Behaviour ? bad Escaped from ? Prison".
Charles transportation to Sydney was aboard the Clyde which departed Portsmouth on 27 April with 200 convicts. The vessel's journey was exactly four months.
Four months after arrival in NSW, in December 1832, the Government Gazette records that Charles was assigned as an "Errand Boy" to Andrew Loder at Paterson. The UK National Archives record HO 10/29 (Record of Convicts Arriving 1828-32, p111 RHS) confirms that Charles, age 17, is in the employment of Andrew Loder and resident at 'Patterson River'.
