Researchers who have claimed this convict
This convict is yet to be claimed Biographies
It is many years since I claimed Alfred, and since then a lot of his life and death has been found. Alfred was sentenced by going AWOL from the navy, how and why he joined is unclear,as his family were involved in provisioning, and latterly I have found he came from a fairly well to do family, which is possibly why he was able to return back to London after his sentence, where he fathered two more children. He had left his wife Mary Ann and son Alfred and daughter Mary Ann to manage for the 7yrs he was in NSW.His wife and daughter maintained themselves by dressmaking and collar turning in the various census.
perhaps he could not settle to domestic life after being in Australia, the youngest Virginia was born in March 1849 and September of that same year finds Alfred,(both he and his son, were also known as William) boarding the ship the " Douglas" bound for South Australia, where he died of Typhoid one day out to sea, and in keeping with the times, was toppled overboard. The ship continued on its voyage with so many deaths from Typhoid, it was,and is known at the Typhoid ship.
