Biographies
Mary Howarth (nee Saunders) was born in Huddersfield in 1777. After her conviction she was transported for 7 years aboard the Maria 1 in 1818, and her daughters Mary Ann and Sarah accompanied her on the voyage. Upon their arrival in Sydney, they were all sent to the Parramatta Female Factory Above the Gaol, the first female factory in Parramatta and subsequently demolished.
Mary's husband John Howarth was also transported aboard the convict ship Tottenham, arriving shortly after Mary. His sentence was life, and upon arrival he was sent to join a road making gang in Parramatta.
Mary and John can't have been apart too long as their daughter Anne was born in July of 1819, son Isaac a year after that, George in 1823 and James in 1825.
By 1825 they were all living together in Parramatta and in April of that year, Mary had her Certificate of Freedom. Daughter Mary Ann was also living with them, but she had married John Pogson in the interim.
