William Lowell born 1821 Willenhall, baptised 30 Dec 1821 Willenhall, Staffordshire, son of James Lowell, latch maker and Jane Lloyd.
At age 16, convicted 3 Jan 1837 at Warwick County Sessions for larceny, stealing 5 neckerchiefs of John Boucher in Birmingham, for which he was imprisoned for 2 months.
Moved to London where he became a member of the Swell Mob gang.
Arrested and imprisoned in Newgate Gaol, tried 21 Oct 1839 at Central Criminal Court London, as William Lovell 19 locksmith Birimingham for stealing cashbox and bank notes £40 of Thomas Thompson tea dealer in King William St, with John Chapman. Sentenced to 15 years transportation. Sent to Leviathan hulk at Portsmouth for 4mths before departing on the Mandarian with John Chapman, also the 3 Chartists, Frost, Jones, and Williams the last men sentenced in England to be hung, drawn and quartered for high treason.
In Hobart served only 3 years before becoming a police constable, received conditional pardon 8 Jan 1844. He was dismissed from police for insolence to his superior in Aug 1846, then the rest of his life is unknown.
Interesting fact is while the Newgate gaol registers record him as William Lowell, when he appeared at trial somehow his name was changed to Lovell and was never corrected.
