Biographies
CONVICTED OF THEFT [which took place 1/10/1808], SENTENCED TO HANG, in Essex assizes on 13/3/1809 commuted to life in the Colony following submission by Liverpool on 6 Apr 1809. Then sent to the hulks in Portsmouth Transported Aug 1809 on "ANNE 2" [Captain Charles Clarke] arrived 27/2/1810 CONDITIONAL PARDON, 28/9/1820.
The Anne [not an English ship] departed England on 25 August 1809, called at Rio de Janeiro and arrived in Port Jackson on the 27th February 1810 with 197 male prisoners [3 died]. One prisoner by the name of Pope was lost overboard.
William, 5'7", fair to pale complexion, light brown hair, hazel eyes. Originally from London?. In 1828 Census, lived Cambridge St Sydney. By 4/9/1817 with wife, assigned to Mr Oxley.
The Rev. Samuel Marsden travelled on the same ship. Marsden known as the 'Flogging vicar' was to become the Rector of StJohns church Parramatta little could he have imagined that one of the convicts on the same ship would have a great grandson who would not only be vicar at StJohns but a bishop!!
1811 muster listed as 'convict Sydney'; 1812-1813 VanDemensLand Govt. labourer [reg as Hillyard Ann 1810]; 1814 muster 'confined in gaol as Hyllyard Anne2; 1817 VDL. Maybe he was in VDL twice? 1st child born 3/1817 therefore created July 1816. 1822 & 1825 muster records him as Butcher in Sydney with children Charlotte 5, Elizabeth 4, Sarah 3, William 2 & 1825 muster records same but no childrens ages.
