Biographies
Research of Francis Sutland’s life in New South Wales is complicated by his use of at least three variants of his surname – Sutland, Suckling, and Setland. There may be more, as the names Sutlin and Sucklin also appear in English records.
State Archives pertaining to the muster of convicts on Ocean 1 does not record a “Francis Sutland”. However, “Francis Suckling” is shown. It is recorded that Francis Suckling was convicted at the Norfolk assizes on 9th August 1814 and was sentenced to transportation for 7 years. His occupation was given as a farmer with his native place being Norfolk. He was aged 29, 5 feet 5 inches tall, of dark ruddy complexion with black hair and brown eyes. His crime is not shown on the Muster, however it is recorded in the UK Public Records Office Criminal Registers Series II that he was tried in the July sessions of 1814 on the charge of larceny and was sentenced to 7 years transportation.
The Muster of Convicts on Ocean 1, shows:-
Norfolk Assizes; 9 August 1814
Francis Suckling; sentenced - seven years transportation; farmer; aged 29; height 5 ft 5 inches; ruddy complexion; black hair; brown eyes.
The PRO Registers for all counties show:-
Name: Francis SUCKLING
When Tried: July Sessions, 1814
Crime: Larceny
Transportation: 7 years”
Two memorials submitted to Governor Brisbane on 3 May and 27 September 1824 reveal that Suckling and Sutland are the same person.
Francis, was appointed as a "Police Constable in the town of Sydney" on 18th June 1822.
Francis at one time, in February 1828 resigned from the constabulary, but he apparently rejoined as it is reported that he was promoted to Conductor in January, 1829, he had been promoted to Wardsman in 1827. He finally resigned from the police force in November, 1833 and became a private watchman.
On 15th October, 1827, Francis married Jane Smith, a convict who was a widow.
Francis and Jane had one child, Martha Emily, born 11th May, 1829, when Jane was 39 years old.
Jane died on 5th March, 1837 and was buried in the Devonshire Street Cemetery (Sand Hills). Gravestone inscriptions of the Sydney Burial Ground (The Sandhills) published in a book by Johnson and Sainty show:-
“No,1890 John SMITH of George Street, Sydney, died 4th May, 1827 aged 55 years, leaving a widow and daughter. Also Jane SUTLAND, wife of Francis SUTLAND of Kent Street, died 5th (March) 183(7), aged 47 years. (U-F).”
Following Jane’s death in 1837, on 11th May 1838 Francis married Ellen DARLY alias WILLIAMS.
Francis died on 30th September, 1854. The following newspaper notices appeared:-
