Biographies
Joseph Hearne was among the convicts transported aboard the “Baring” which departed England 20th April 1815, and arrived in Sydney Cove on the 7th September 1815. A trip of 140 days. Three hundred (300) male convicts boarded the “Baring” from England and 298 male convicts disembarked at Sydney. The Master of the ship was John Lamb and the ship’s surgeon was David Reid. Joseph Hearne was forwarded to Parramatta for distribution with other convicts.
According to the court records, in October 1813 Joseph was a seventeen year old errand boy and a native of London. He was described as being 5ft 2 and a half inches, dark ruddy complexion, brown hair and brown eyes.
He was convicted at Middlesex on 27th October 1813 for stealing, in company with William Duffett, thirty-five penny-pieces and fifty halfpennies. They both received a sentence of seven years transportation. Joseph was placed in the hulks at Woolwich and remained there until the “Baring” departed England in April 1915.
