John was convicted at Gloucester Quarter Sessions on 1 July 1834 and sentenced to 7 years transportation, he arrived Sydney aboard Mary Ann on 26 October 1835 and had Ticket of Leave 39/2062 Maitland.

With the consent of the Governor John married Mary Baker (Surrey 1840) on 15 February 1841 Christ Church Newcastle NSW.

John Thornton was murdered (poison) by his wife Mary Baker (Surrey) and Joseph Vale (Lord Melville) on 16 January 1844 at Mulberry Creek near Newcastle NSW.
