Biographies

Matthew Smith was a London goldsmith and jeweller convicted of stealing gold seals from a shop in 1812. Sentenced to death, which was commuted to transportation for life, he was sent as a stockman to Parramatta on arrival in Sydney. He was eventually employed by the Johnston family of Annandale, moving south with their stock to near where Canberra now is. He married in 1836 to another convict from the Numa (1834) and together they had six children. The family took up land as a squatting run near the present site of Albury in the early 1840s which is where Matthew Smith died c. 1846/7. He was buried on a site which is now under the waters of Lake Hume.
