Biographies
James Tate was born in East Hatley. He married Jane Finding in 1808 in Potton. They had four surviving children and he was a carpenter by trade. He appears to have absconded around 1817 and Jane and the children were removed from Potton parish to neighbouring Wrestlingworth. Some years later, he was arrested and sent to the Bedford House of Corrections for being a 'rogue and vagabond'. Finally, in 1827, he was arrested in Essex for stealing his master's carpentry tool and sentenced to seven years' transportation.
