Lewis was convicted at Stafford Assizes on 6 August 1829 and sentenced to 7 years transportation, he arrived Sydney aboard Dunvegan Castle on 30 March 1830 with trade showing "silk weaver".

Lewis was convicted on 11 August 1837 of murdering John McCormick on 6 June 1837 at Gwyder River (with an axe) and sentenced to death.
