Joseph and twelve others participated in mutiny rebellion on Norfolk Island in January 1834; William McCulloch (Dunvegan Castle 1830), Walter Burke (Planter 1832), Patrick Glinny (Prince Regent 1824), Michel Anderson (Bussorah Merchant 1828), James Bell (Marquis Huntley 1830), John Butler (John 1829), Robert Douglas (Martha 1818), Henry Drummond (Ocean 1823$ , Thomas Freshwater (Manilus 1827), William Groves (Royal admiral 1830), Henry Knowles (America 1829) & Robert Ryan ( Manilus 1828).

Joseph was born Hampshire and was convicted at Southampton Assizes on 2 March 1819 and entrenched to life transportation, he arrived Sydney aboard Recovery on 18 December 1819

Joseph and twelve others were convicted at Court Martial on 18 July 1834 and sentenced to death

Joseph together with Burke, Glinny, Bell, Butler, Douglas & Drummond were hanged on 22 September 1834 at Norfolk Island (the other six were hanged the next day)
