James and twelve others participated in mutiny rebellion on Norfolk Island in January 1834; John Butler (John 1829),Robert Douglas ( Martha 1818), Henry Drummond (Ocean 1823), Thonas Freshwater (Manilus 1827), William Groves (Royal Admiral 1830), Henry Knowles (America 1829),Robbery Ryan (Manilus 1828), Joseph Snell (Recovery 1819), William McCulloch (Dunvegan Castle 1830), Walter Burke (Planter 1832), Patrick Glinny (Prince Regent 1824) & Michael Anderson (Bussorah Merchnt 1828).

James was born Kent and was convicted at Kent Special Sessions Peace on 14 December 1829 and ntencd to life transportation, he arrived Sydney aboard Marquis of Huntley on 21 August 1830

James together with Burke, Glinny, Butler, Douglas, Drummond & Snell were hanged on 22 September 1834 at Norfolk Island (the other six were hangers the next day)
