Thomas Giddings was born 1807 in England
tried and pardoned as Thomas Giddings
transported to Australia as Thomas Giddens
and changed his name to Thomas Gilbert in Australia
Thomas Giddens entered Australia as a convict in 1828
on the ship Hooghley captained by Peter J. Reeves
and arrived 24/2/1828
with 99 other convicts.
His age was given as 20 and his birth date as 1808
On the New South Wales 1828 census
Thomas was living in the household of
Joseph Hickey Groves a merchant in Parramatta
with several other convicts
He was classed as a general servant aged 20 years.
Religion Protestant.
Thomas was issued with a Certificate of Freedom 26/9/1841
Details on Certificate
Occupation a labourer
and his description was as follows.
He was 5ft2 inches tall,
with a ruddy complexion,
bluish eyes, dark hair, large nose
and 2 scars on the knuckle of little finger on right hand.
Thomas aged 34 years married
Susan Gill aged 20 years on 31/5/1841
at St. James Parish Melbourne in the County of Bourke
Thomas was classed as a bachelor from Manero Plains
Thomas and Susan lived in New South Wales
before moving to Victoria about 1850
and it appears sometime after 1852/1853
they changed their name to Gilbert.
On a baptism certificate for James in 1852 Thomas
was stated as a settler residing in Melbourne
so possibly this was when they decided to make a new start
in Seymour with the name Gilbert
All the children finally had the name of Gilbert
Uriah and Thomas registered at birth as Giddens but
both married and were buried under the name of Gilbert
Baptism details at the Parish of St. Peters, Melbourne
for Susan born 1846, William born 1848/9
they were named as Giddon
Both apparently born in New South Wales presumably as Giddens
James born 1850/1 baptised as Giddon born in Victoria
George and Louisa born in Victoria presume as Gilbert.
Thomas died on 8th May, 1857 at Sugar Loaf Creek aged 50 years
He died from a swelling of the knee
and no doctor was in attendance
William Taylor named as minister
Thomas’s death certificate was filled in by a M.Feneh
occupation Pound Keeper address Sugar Loaf Creek.
The death is announced at Sugar Loaf Creek of Thomas Gilbert, a native of London in his 47th year. An excerpt from the paper 15th May 1857
Thomas was away from his family
as the details on his death certificate are not very accurate.
His married state was unknown, his children were incorrect in numbers it said he had 6 boys and 2 girls (one too many boys)
Thomas was stated as a farmer in Kilmore.
