Biographies

Isaac Isles/Eyles (1804-1896) convict, farmer and Inn keeper of Colebook Tasmania. Isaac was tried 18 December 1830 at Winchester England for machine-breaking during "swing riots" in Hampshire and was sentenced to death. This was commuted to seven years transportation. He left Portsmouth England 14 April 1831 and arrived to VDL per 'Proteus' 4 August 1831. He was born 25 March 1804 at Upavon Wiltshire son of Richard Eyles & Mary Bengor of Wiltshire. Isaac married Eliza Gifford (c1815-1902) at Hobart Tasmania 14 September 1835 with issue of eight sons and two daughters. A pardon was granted to him in 1836 and he died 3 September 1896 at Brandy Bottom near Colebrook Tasmania and is buried at St James C/E cemetery at Colebrook.
