James partnered Guiseppe La Rosa (Guildford 1812) and Isaac Walker (Admiral Gambier 1808) in bush ranging activities ; assault robbery Henry Taylor at apprentices Hill, Eleanor Brown and Samuel Latkin at Iron Cove.

James together with Isaac Walker and Guiseppe La Rosa were convicted on 22 March 1814 of bush ranging and sentenced to death.

James sentence was commuted to life along with Isaac Walker while Guiseppe La rosa was hanged on 10 April 1814.
