Biographies

John Cochrane, son of James Cochrane and Jane Paterson, was born 11 March 1832 in Edinburgh, Scotland and was baptised in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral 16 March 1832. He was the middle of three children born to James Cochrane and Jane Paterson. The family lived in Aird's Close, Grassmarket, Edinburgh.
John, along with William McGurk was charged with theft of two sacks and a quantity of ropes from a stable in the Grasmarket, property of James [Patrick] Birnie, East Smith's Close, Grassmarket. They were found guilty on 21 February 1848 (aggravated by previous convictions: housebreaking 6 months, theft 60 days 5 times). They were transported to Australia for 7 years.
John is listed on the Australian Transportation Register for the Vessel Blenheim which departed Plymouth on 10 April 1850 and arrived at Van Deimen's land 24 July 1850 with 306 other criminals. John is described in his Convict Conduct Record as being 5’3¼” tall, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, oval face, high forehead, brown eyebrows, He was single and could read and write a little. He has J.C. and other blue marks inside his left arm and an anchor on the back of his right hand. He was released from Van Diemen's Land on 22 February 1855.
