James arrived Sydney age 26 aboard Dunvegan Castle on 16 October 1832 with his Indent showing alias "Cavanagh, Kavenagh" and trade "ploughman".

James partnered Blester Chesterfield (Mary 1833) & Charles Sergeant (not identified) In bushranging that led to murder of John Walters and Robert Stewart.

All three were convicted at Supreme Court on 7 Feb 1834 and sentenced to death.
