James was tried and convicted at Castlebar Mayo County in 1823 and sentenced to 7 years transportation

James together with Patrick Sullivan (Brampton 1823), Matthew Craven (Guildford 1824) &'Thomas Cavenagh (transported convict ship not identified) commenced bush ranging activity.

All four were convicted of bush ranging on 2 Sept 1826 and sentenced to death.
