Biographies
Charles Sykes was the alias of my 2xGreat-grandfather, Edmund Wingate, born in Merston, Sussex, England in about 1807.He was convicted in 1831 at Croydon Assizes of Larceny and desertion (his record states he was a farm labourer and soldier but I cannot find a military service)and sentenced to 7 years transportation. He spent 1 year on board the Hulk Cumberland at Chatham and was then transported to NSW in 1832 on board The Mangles (6).He gained his Certificate of Freedom in 1839 and withdrew £2 from the convict savings bank in 1845. His convict ident in 1833 states he was married with no children but I cannot find a marriage before his conviction. He may have married, as Edmund, in 1842 a lady called Julia Gunn, and they may have had a son 1849 who died the same year. He came back to England but I cannot find out how or why. His occupation on the UK 1861 census was 'shepherd' so he may have learned this in Australia. He lived with Emily Bennett, my 2x great-grandmother but they never married. They had at least 8 children. In the 1881 census he was in the local workhouse listed as a 'widower, pauper', although Emily was still alive. In 1890 he died of 'old age'.He is buried in Bognor Regis Cemetery, in Sussex, England. In 1862 Charles Sykes was convicted of stealing a coat and was sentenced to 3 months hard labour.
