Biographies
James Grove was my ggg grandfather. He was married to Elizabeth Hancock and had 9 children. On 9/2/1831 he was chared with suspicion of felony in sealing and carrying away about eleven bushels of wheaten flour and five hempen sacks on that night of 9th Feb, from the warehouse of Rice Williams sit. in the parish of Dursley. The said warehouse forming part of the curtilage of the dwelling house of the named Rice Williams. Occupied therewith the said flour being the property of the said R Williams. He was tried on March 30th 1831 and was to be transported for 14 years to Van Diemens Land. He was a Shearman. He had previously been detained before with his son James the younger for stealing a hatchet but wasn't found guilty like his son who had to serve three calendar months. His daughter Emma Groves was the second wife of my gg grandfather James Smith.
A detailed description of him brown hair, dark sandy whiskers, pale complexion, thin face, dark grey eyes far in his head. Rather flat nose, a scar on the left temple, marked on the right arm with sun, tree, bird on the top. Blue ring mark on the middle finger right hand. On the left hand G III R our Saviour on the cross, anchor, ark, star, bird and crown. Height 5ft 4 1/2 inches.
