Biographies

James was transported to Van Diemen’s Land for 14 years for stealing. He arrived in 1831. He committed further offenses - one being he tried stowing away on a vessel, with the intent of absconding from the Colony - for this he received 2 years hard labour on the Spring Hill Road Party. James was literate and managed to find a draper to take him on as an assistant, and he completed the 7 years training required. In time, he refashioned his life in the genteel and respectable drapery business. He was given a conditional pardon in 1841. He married Catherine (who was a 27 year old milliner) - when he was 40.
