Biographies
Thomas Grant was one of three brothers from Kirby le Soken, Essex who were transported for their part in the Kirby Riot of 6 December 1830.
Thomas, son of Thomas and Mary (nee Purkiss) was baptised 7 September 1800 at St Michael's, Kirby. He married Sarah Golding on 17 November 1820. They had 6 children. He was involved in the riot of 6 December 1830 and was convicted of two counts of machine breaking and sentenced to 7 years transportation on each, consecutively.
Thomas, his two brothers James and John and 221 other convicts sailed from Portsmouth on 6 February 1831 on the Eliza. They arrived on 28 May 1831.
Mary had a child by an unknown person (perhaps William Mann) in 1837, and married William Mann in 1841.
Thomas was in trouble for being insolent to a Magistrate, and also received 6 months for stealing wine from his master and then 50 lashes for absconding from a road party, and was also reprimanded for disobedience of orders.
He was granted Free Pardon 297 3 August 1837.
James Grant, John Grant and Thomas Grant are all buried in the Geelong East Cemetery, Victoria, Australia; however there is no way of proving that they are related, or that they are the graves of the three Grant brothers from Kirby le Soken, Essex, England.
