Biographies

John Gilmore was born 1806 in Hampshire, UK. He was tried and convicted of machine breaking and sentenced to transportation for life. He left Portsmouth 19/12/1831 aboard the Eleanor along with 135 other male convicts (via the Cape) arriving in Port Jackson 26/6/1831 - a voyage of 126 days.
John was a labourer/reaper 5 foot 7 1/2 inches tall, with a ruddy complexion, brown hair and grey eyes. He had a small scar on his lower lip - left side.
At the time that he applied (28/2/1838)to marry Elizabeth Johnson (alias Taylor) he had been pardoned. He and Elizabeth were married 16/3/1838 at the Trinity Church, Bathurst NSW. Their son, Henry John was born the following year -24/1/1839. John died in 1843.
