Biographies

Mary born 1 August 1779 aged 20 was convicted at Surrey Assizes for stealing calico and sentenced to a term of 14 years. She is was one of 97 convicts on the ship Britannia departing in January 1798 and arriving in Sydney in January 1798. She was sent to Norfolk Island where she married William Hutchinson on 21 June 1801, by Rev. Fulton, with witnesses Henry Marsh and Harriet Wray (Royal Admiral 17992). She had 7 children on Norfolk Island and a further 2 on her return to Sydney. Following their return to Sydney in 1813 she remained in Sydney until 1819 when she returned to England on the Shipley. She was in the passenger list as "Mrs Mary Hutchinson wife to Mr Wm H Superintendent". She and other passengers were victualled during the voyage at the expense of the Crown, by order of Governor Lachlan Macquarie.
She is believed to have died 1 August 1821.
