Biographies
Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England in 1823 or 1825, William Carnaby marries Lydia Scaife (1816 - 1872) in 1844.
In 1863 William and Lydia were seperated, she living with her brother, Shield Scarfe. William burnt down Shield's Marine Store in the early hours of the 15th August, and was identified by neighbours.
William was tried at Newcastle Assizes on the 28 November 1863 of “Maliciously and feloniously, on the 12th day of August, 1863, setting fire to a shop in the possession of one Shield Scaife, with intent thereby to injure the said Shield Scaife”. He pleaded guilty to arson and was sentenced to penal servitude for ten years.
He was first at Wakefield Prison, then removed to Chatham Prison on the 12 October 1864 and discharged to Western Australia on the 8th May 1865, departing aboard the "Racehorse" on 19th May 1865 and arriving on 10th August.
His wife Lydia died in 1872 in Newcastle, leaving no children. Her brother, Shield Scarfe, dies in 1875 leaving a wife and three children.
