Biographies
Nathan Shuttle was born in Little Bedwyn, Wiltshire, the s/o Nathan Shuttle and his wife Jane(Bird). Nathan was bpt. 19/4/1804. His mother died when he was barely five years old, and his father married again in 1811.
Life was very hard for Wiltshire labourers at this time, as it must have been for many people in England, so, poaching and petty theft was frequently resorted to to feed the family.
Nathan went a step too far when he stole various items of clothing from Knowle Farm, Little Bedwyn.
Nathan was apprehended on the road to Hungerford by a local constable. Not only was he wearing some of the clothing, but the rest was in a large bundle in his possession.
He was transported to Sydney Cove and arrived 18/8/1825.
His life is sketchy from there on in,he appears in the 1828 census in the house of John Grant where he is listed as Nathaniel Shettle.
He was granted a ticket of leave 24/11/1830, and on 3/4/1832 he obtained a certificate of freedom.
He applied for permission to marry Mary Ann Cooper in 1836 but this was refused as she had stated that she was a married woman with 3 children.
He also spent a month in jail at Parramatta in 1846 on a charge of assault.
That is where the trail goes cold for now.
