John was tried and convicted at York West Riding Quarter Sessions on 22 April 1823 and sentenced to 7 years transportation

John arrived Sydney aged about 20 aboard Ocean on 27 August 1823

John was convicted on 31 January 1831 at Supreme Court Sydney with James Murphy (Asia 1825) & William Bubb (Albion 1827) of murdering Adam Oliver (Eliaz 1822) on 20 November 1830'on Norfolk Island.
