John was convicted Lancaster Quarter Sessions 20 October 1822 and sentenced to 7 years transportation, he arrived Tasmania aboard Phoenix 21 July 1824. An alias is evidenced "Cockshott".

John had several incidents with Authorities & was later convicted on 13 April 1832 of murder Richard Crozier (Surrey) when escaping from Macquarie Harbour Penal Settlement and sentenced to death.
