Biographies
My gg grandfather was born 1826 in Middlesex, England - probably the parish of St Luke's Old Street - as per the 1851 census when he was listed aboard the convict hulk 'Warrior'.
In the 1841 census he was living with parents John (silversmith) and Ann Watson, brother David Watson b1823, apprentice silversmith and younger sister Catherine Watson b1832. John and Ann Watson were born in Scotland. At this time they were living at 72 Milton St in the parish of St Giles Without Cripplegate, MDX. David died in 1844, mother Ann died in 1845, sister Catherine died in 1899. No definitive information has yet been found regarding the death of his father John Watson.
On 8th Apr 1849 William Watson and James Cau(l)field were convicted at the Old Bailey of stealing a clock and sentenced to transportation. Watson spent 3 years on the convict hulk before arriving in Fremantle per 'Pyrenees' in May 1853. He gained his ticket of leave and took up farming in the area around Jennapullin (near Northam) in Western Australia.
On 16th Sep 1858 he married Catherine McNamara (daughter of James McNamara, army pensioner) at Northam. William and Catherine Watson had 11 children between 1858 and 1884; 10 of whom survived and had families of their own.
Catherine Watson died 17th Apr 1896; William Watson died 13th Mar 1898; they are buried together at Northam Cemetery.
In 2003 and again in 2008 my father Ross Watson organised family reunions at Northam to allow the many descendants of our convict ancestor William Watson to meet together and celebrate the achievements of this WA pioneer.
