William escaped Launceston Gaol with Henry Stone (Prince of Orange 1822) and Michael Brown (Lady Ridley 1821) and George Ellis (Phoenix 1822) and William Hoadley ( Morley 1823) and committed robberies.

William was convicted at Gloucester City Assizes on 2 April 1823 and sentenced to life transportation, he arrived Tasmania aboard Sir Godfrey Webster on 30 December 1823.
