William escaped Launceston Gaol with William Birt (Sir Godfrey Webster 1823) and Henry Strong (Prince of Orange 1822) and Michael Brown (Lady Ridley 1821) and George Ellis ( Phoenix 1822) and committed robberies.

William was convicted at Kent Assizes and sentenced to life transportation, he arrived Tasmania aboard Morley on 11 January 1823.
