Biographies

Thomas Willett was born circa 1800 in Brewood in Staffordshire England.

He and brother Charles were tried at the Stafford Quarter Sessions on 16 October 1822 for theft of a jacket and waistcoat at Wednesfield and sentenced to 7 years transportation to Van Dieman's Land. Thomas' convict record states: notorious thief and badly connected.

Departed 18 Mar 1823 from England on a journey of 138 days. 157males. Arrived in VDL on 3 Aug 1823 aboard 'Competitor 1". The following description was taken down: a door locksmith, he was 5’6” and aged 23. He had brown hair and light grey eyes. He had a small scar on his nose and a large scar on his neck and body. His parents were at Wolverhampton and his father was a master blacksmith

Thomas married Mary Ann Devereux, grand daughter of first-fleeters Marine John McCarty and convict Ann Beardsley on 13 Jan 1832 in Broadmarsh Tasmania. Thomas and Mary Ann had five children - James(1833-1891), Ann Charlotte(1835-1918),John 1837-1925, William(1839-1929) and Thomas Jr(1842-1902). James died in Moonee Ponds, Victoria, Ann (married name Hewer) in Hobart, John and William died in Bellingen on the NSW mid North coast and the youngest, Thomas Jr, died at White Cliffs in central NSW

Thomas Willett is thought to have died in 1843 or early 1844 in Cygnet as his wife Mary Ann remarried to Daniel O'Rourke in Oct 1844. Mary Ann went on to have 4 more sons to Daniel O'Rourke, who retained a close relationship to their Willett half brothers. Mary Anne's sons - Daniel Jr, and Simon O'Rourke also lived on the mid North NSW coast. Mary Ann O'Rourke (prev Willett) died in Patrick St Hospital, Hobart on 28 Mar 1857.
