Biographies
Charged with stealing a sheep and tried 9 March 1937 in Limerick. (Other sources say Maurice was convicted of burglary and ronnery). Some reports say he was initially given the death penalty but this was commuted to life. He was transported on the 'Calcutta' - placed on board on 1 April 1837 and arrived Sydney 4 August 1837. (Irish Court register - prisoner number 558).
In the census of 1837 it indicated he was a convict in NSW, aged 27, located in Sydney, he could read and write and was of Roman Catholic religion.
He was assigned 'to labour at "Rimbanda", married Maryanne' an Aboriginal woman.
Maurice was granted a TICKET OF LEAVE on 27 September 1845 (No. 45/1663) and allowed to remain in the District of Maitland.
He was granted a conditional pardon on 10 July 1850 (No. 50/493).
Maurice 'died around 17 October 1869 at "Rimbanda", verdict of mahistrate enquiry by Thomas A. Perry, Bendemeer, Magistrte on reel 2922, nsW Archives - struck dead by lightening ...'
